Lens Dilema

Hi all

I'm trying to decide whether to replace a lens .

Currently have a Tamron 70-300 DI Macro( no VR/IS or whatever you wanna call it ) . Initially I was pleased with it & got some cracking shots but as I've improved a little bit I'm now noticing that it's soft when at full reach .

I mainly shoot Motorbike racing & wildlife...treated myself to a sigma 150-500 which I love but occasionally it's just too much , ie when I don't need the full reach as bikes are quite close .I used the Tamron last weekend at a dog show but the 300 wasn't long enough & ended up shooting at full zoom a lot the time , other times the action was quite close so it was ok .The sigma was in for repair so didn't have that option but there would have been times when , with 150 being closest , it would have still been too long....I hope I'm making some sort of sense here ?

Was thinking about this as an alternative :


Nikon 55-300mm f4.5-5.6 G AF-S DX VR Lens

Got a really good price from Digital Rev but as ever I'm unsure
Budget is £300 so fairly limited , don't want a prime thankfully...


So , opinions on the above lens & any other options that I may not have considered much appreciated

The 55-300mm looks OK but the 70-300mm VR is better, sharper, they can be had for about £300 second hand or about £380 new.

I agree that the 70 - 300 is a better lens but if you shop about you can pick up the 55 - 300 for about 185 pounds new. This puts it well within budget!!

Panomaz.com sell for 196.00 or so but best buy uk will price match minus 10 percent of the difference bringing it down to about the 185.00 mark with free delivery!!

The new tamron 70-300 vc usd is getting a lot of good reviews from sites like nikonians, dpreview, photo.net and others. Much sharper than the LD Di version and has VR and a quiet motor.
