lens distance

I am fairly new to photography and although it is probably a simply question but i will ask any, how do you work out the distance and lens will give you ? I was told but a friend there was a thread like this a quite some time ago but i cant find it. Could any help me ?

Look using google for a photographic field of view calculator... that will give you the dimensions of your view at whatever focal length vs distance.
