Lens - f2.8 and lots of reach?

I like the DOF of my 50mm, and I like the focal range of my 18-105mm kit lens.
So I'm thinking that a cross between the two could be a good all round lens and suit most of my needs at the moment.

So far I've found the Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di Lens, but I think it's telephoto could be a little short of what I'd like.

So, any suggestions?

I'll have around £350 to spend, but I don't mind waiting to save more if there is a better lens option.
It will be going on a D90.
I'm looking at getting into portrait shots next year, but currently I like landscape and general family shots.

Hi Neil,

The Tamron 28-75 is my favourite lens. I first bought it to use on my D90 and it is currently practically glued to the D300 :) It's as sharp as a tack even wide open!

Whether, or not, you find it a bit short at the long end I can't say but I don't find it too short compared to the 18-105 kit lens (which has now found its way back onto the D90).
 
My 28-70 f2.8 stick on my d7000 most of the time.

I use the Nikon 28-70 f2.8 and it is very good.

Previously I use a Tokina 28-70 f2.8 (currently selling) and it does it's job as well, specially in the studio when stop down.

Either one you can't go wrong. The tamron is good as well
 
i had this on my sony, loved it. although if used indoors for people shots on a crop body can be limiting
 
Well the Tax Man is apparently sending me a cheque for a refund on over paid tax, so the money is here!

I've tweaked the thread tittle to hopefully get a different response, but as my original post noted, I have my eye on the Tamron SP AF 28-75mm f2.8 XR Di Lens but feel it wont have the reach I'm used to from my 18-105 kit lens.

There are plenty of options for the zoom range, but they generally start around f4 through to f6 at maximum reach. I wont to keep to f2.8 (or as close possible) at full zoom.

Any ideas anyone?
 
to behonest on f2.8 lens i think your option will be 17-50 (tamron/sigma), 17-55 (nikon), 28-70 (nikon, tamron, sigma), 24-70 (nikon, tamron, sigma), 28-85 (Tokina, but hard to find now), 70-200 (nikon, tamron, sigma, Tokina), 80-200 (nikon)

I don't think you will find something like 18-105 f2.8 ...........

Alot of us include me went for lens like 28-70 and 70-200 to cover the range, then add another wide angle lens.
 
50-150 2.8 Sigma? Really nice lens and fairly cheap though a bit rare now that it is out of production. Great IQ even at 2.8 and very very fast AF.

You will not find one lens that will cover the 18-105 range at 2.8. The 24-120 F4 Nikor is well regarded but to get a 2.8 across that range you will need two lenses I think. The 17-70 2.8-4 Sigma is also worth considering as it is 2.8 max for quite a bit of the range.

My vote would go for a two lens setup, the 17-50 Tamron and the 50-150 Sigma.
 
The option that vrapan suggest is a good setup, its all depend on what you want etc.

my 2 options are either buy the 28-70, 70-200 and then a wide angle or

17-50(55) and 70-200

I have the sigma 17-70 hsm os model and love it. A huge upgrade from my 18-55 kit lens.

I want to partner it with a 70-200 f/2.8. I then have 17- 30mm at 2.8 or near before it drops to f/4 at 70mm, but I will also have 70mm at f/2.8 on the longer lens, so only a small range dropping down to f/4.
