Assuming I win the lottery whats the best way to establish whether a lens will be suitable both for my D200 and full frame Nikons. I guess it will be the D9 by the time I can afford one but no harm in planning for the future.

Can you point to a website please.

Hi Peter,
As far as i know, there are 2 "types" of lenses for Nikons, DX and FX. DX lenses are designed for Cropped sensors, like the D200, D80, D40 etc. FX lenses are for the full frame.

the D3 will accept DX lenses but will crop to compensate, Havent not used a FX lens on a cropped sensor i cant answer if that would work or not. :bonk:

Check out the links below, they are pretty good for reviews etc..

dizzledazzle is basically correct.

Nikon lens nomenclature is ridiculously complicated, but basically if you see the letters "DX" in there somewhere it means it's designed for crop-sensor cameras. It will physically fit the D3 but (if you have "auto DX crop" set in the menus) the camera will crop the image to give you 5MP instead of 12MP.

You won't see any Nikon lenses marked "FX", but if it doesn't say "DX" then it is designed for full-frame (i.e. the D3 and 35mm film cameras).

Actually I think the new 24-70 is marked FX ( could be wrong though )

Also to add to the info, sigma lenses are either "DC" Cropped sensors only, or "DG" which is fine for full frame.

Ha ha. No, I didn't take it. It's on the Nikon USA web site, amongst their marketing material.
