Lens for D3100?

In the market for two new lens.

I have a Nikon D3100 but my kit lens has just broke. My main interest is portraiture but Im also trying a mix of things at the minute. So Im thinking of getting a portraiture lens and an all rounder.

So I was thinking a Nikon Prime lens at 35mm or 85mm

and a 18-100mm lens of any make that works for Nikon

The lens need to have built in auto-focus since the D3100 doesn’t have it in the body. I think they have to be marked AF-S but Im not 100% sure :?

Also since the D3100 has a cropped sensor Im not sure which size of prime lens is best for portraiture.

So could anyone suggest some lens?

My budget is up to £400.

I would look at the sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4. I replaced my kit lens with this and it is a big improvement.


I have a 35mm f/1.8, but it only comes out when I need f/1.8, otherwise I just use my sigma.
