I am going to Europe soon and want one lens to take with me for landscapes and cityscapes I have a d7000 and a 18-70mm 5.6-22 I don't want to spend more than $500 usd
 
I agree.

You *might* find that, at times, 18mm isn't wide enough. It depends where you're going, but many European cities can be very cramped in places. So there will be times when an ultra-wide lens would be useful. The Sigma 10-20mm has a good reputation and is relatively inexpensive.

But if you only want one lens, you can't get one that will cover ultra-wide angles and also normal focal lengths. So stick with the 18-70.

Have you planned what you want to photograph? That way you can work out your lens needs before you go.
 
My single lens solution for a crop DSLR is a Tamron 18-270. Not yet had a proper look at the results but a quick peek seems to show that it's not too bad!
 
I would recommend a superzoom lens (e.g 18-200).

Since the idea is versatility, I would also aim to get one with stabilization - O.S if sigma, VC if tamron, VR if Nikon.
 
I would think more zoom would be handier than wider.
In the mountains the foreshortening effect of 200mm can be useful.
A single lens solution such as 18-200 is not a bad plan.
 
How about the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM? Tested in AP a couple of weeks ago and rated very highly. Not cheap (at around £650) but that wide and that fast should allow indoor shots pretty much anywhere! Its 850g weight seems to be the only real downside.

I second that but that focal length is already covered although you can pick the 18-35 for £539. My first choice would most definitely be an ultra wide angle (sigma 10-20 mm f/4-5.6) (sigma 10-20 f/3.5) or (Tokina 11-16 f/2.8) but if you want F/1.8 there's only one choice and that is the sigma 18-35 f/1.8 and its tac sharp. Depth of field at 1.8 will be paper thin.
 
You will not buy better than the nikon 18-200 m&m
Brilliant walkabout lens and not to heavy.
 
Bazza, that focal length range is great for FF but less so for crop (IMO). It has to be said that the variable aperture version (as sold as a kit lens with the D700) is inferior (in terms of IQ) to the newer f/4 fixed aperture version. I had the old one but soon replaced it with a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 but have relatively recently replaced that with the current 24-120 f/4. The FF bodies I have both cope very well with low light so I don't miss the extra stop of speed f/2.8 gave me and the extra length combined with the (excellent) VR on the 24-120 were enough to override my resistance to rampant GAS!

Both the 24-120 options are over budget for the OP (US$500) but Holty's 18-200 Nikkor should be findable 2nd hand under budget as should the Sigma and Tamron alternatives.

I used that lens almost all the time with my nikon D300 which actually gave enough width for almost every occasion and yet sufficient distance to cover most of what I shot.

Of course its a case of horses for courses and may not be ideal for everyone but it never left the D300 on holiday. The link I posted shows that lens well within budget used.
reminds me I must try out all my lenses on my D800 sometime
