lens hood for Canon 15-85. eBay or Canon?

I have a 15-85 arriving today but of course there will be no hood.

Ive seen a few on ebay that look like they will do the job, and are pretty cheap, but im worried about going almost a week without a hood and i'm thinking i should just bite the bullet and pay £40 or whatever for the real deal in a shop today ro tomorrow (if i can find one)

If it wasnt for the bank holidays coming up i couldn't be too worried but with the post etc i doubt i could get any thing from eBay before next tuesday at the earliest.

Anyone have any thoughts, other than how bloody expensive the Canon ones are?
Are the eBay ones ok?

I have one of the £7 ebay ones. It arrived next day. It isn't flocked internally, so no idea if it makes flare worse of better - but I've only had it a week and I've been playing with other things ;). I know the uWinKa ones are flocked (well, they have a textured interior...). Same price, but from China...
 
Cheers for the reply Andy.

Im happy to use anything to get me over the weekend but all the eBay adds are saying delivery 2-3 days which means things get very complicated as i dont know where ill be on sat.
I would prefer one that has the texture inside and have sene them for about £11

Or pop into one of the many camera shops in central London and pick one up E.g. Microglobe near Holborn.
 
I ordered one yesterday from 7day shop but got a email last night telling me they are now on back order so i cancelled the order.

I have now ordered one from eBay. Hopefully it wont take too long to arrive. Its coming from the UK and is felt lined so should be good enough.
I know im taking a chance not using a hood for a while but i really cant get my head around paying £40+ for something i can get for £10 with just a slightly longer wait.

Mine has been despatched but i have no idea when it will arrive. Ill post back when it does.

For the record i wnet out this afternoon and took around 100 shots with my new lens and a good 10-15 had lens flare. To be expected of course but im sure its way less than my 17-55IS would have got without its hood.

I think im going to keep this lens. I wouldnt say its IQ was quite as good as the 17-55IS, and maybe its not a sterling copy but i really enjoyed using it, especially at 15mm. What a difference 2mm makes.
 
The lens hood arrived to day and im very pleased with it.
Its flocked throughout the inside, and its a very snug fit. It sits perfectly on the lens and there doesn't seem to be any movement.
I had a few shots over the weekend that suffered form flare so a lens hood is definitely a good idea.

I am very happy with the lens but im pretty sure its going back. Ive already got the Amazon returns number and label. I have a couple of week's to send it off and i really cant decide what i'll do.
I cant bring myself to sell my 17-55IS, and i really need to do this to fund the 15-85. Even if i did sell it i know ill need another later in the year so ive decided to keep the 17-55IS.

IMO the only thing the 17-55IS has in its favour is the fact that it does f/2.8.
Build, size, weight, IS and feel is better on the 15-85, plus its cheaper.
IQ is pretty similar. The 15-85 does have more vignetting but as i shoot raw all my shots go through LR and get fixed anyway so that's not something that bothers me.
The edges are fine on the 15-85, although slightly better on the 17-55IS but thats not something i would ever call a deal breaker.

The reason im sending the 15-85 back is i will want a f/2.8 zoom once we hit the winter months and i know i wont be able to afford another £500+ lens this year.

Same here. No lens hood, but lots of spam. :bat:
 
Ok thanks for the pointers, I'm torn between the two, thinking the 17 and maybe get a 70-200 f4L later on in the year

I use them all the time so i dont mind the adds they send out as they do have some great prices but i can understand your frustration.

Martylaa. The 70-200 f/4L is a great lens. I had the IS version and it was the sharpest lens ive ever used. Stupidly i sold it to get my second 24-105L, big mistake.

Good to have an opinion from someone who has owned both. I really like the 15-85 as its versatility, range and excellent IS system wins out over aperture for the photography we do (i.e. 99.9% static).

Does the 60D not have in body vignetting compensation for JPEGs?

It does but its not always enough, especially if your shooting something like sky.
I always shoot raw and use LR3 so the in camera corrections aren't relevant. LR3 does a fantastic job though so its really a non issue.
