Lens hoods

Looking to buy a lens hood for my camera and just looking for some advice as I don't know where to start. Have a canon 300D with the 2 kit lenses (18-50, 55-200) and wanting something that would ideally fit both lenses without looking stupid

but I don't know the best place to look, if it should be plastic or rubber, and if it should be solid on one of the shaped ones (where it is sort of a wave)

Hope that all hasn't sounded too daft.

Much appreciated,

Go have a look on Canon's website, lookup your lenses, find out what the Canon lens hood for those two lenses is (likely to be different for each) and head off to ebay... you'll find both genuine Canon parts and maybe some third party ones for less than half the price.

Just a note if you do but aftermarket ones, make sure they are decent quality ones and the inside of the hood is a matt finish. The genuine ones are a "flock" type finish - otherwise you will get reflection if it's nice and shiny.

When you know the codes of the lens hoods - each lens has it's own hood (although some do interchange) you can search e-bay etc.

I will try to find you details of the hood I bought for my daughters 18-50 lens on her 300D - it was an aftermarket one, matt interior and fitted well.

Thank you for the replies I will have a look on ebay..

as a side note with regards to 3rd party hoods, are there any that are better than the canon versions or is there anything other than what has been mentioned about the finish that I need to be looking for?

The Marumi seem a good aftermarket one
