Lens hoods!

I have that type hood on my 105mm macro. The HB-38. It doesn't cause any vignetting even when focusing up close. But of course, it's a completely different construction to a 50mm. I don't know if you can even get a hood like that for smaller lenses? What is your main reason for wanting one?

Only reason is because I suffered with quite a pronounced flare in a number of photos taken at roughly 60-80 degrees to the sun which spoiled a few shots. Given that I take my photos at a stopped-down aperture, I don't want to lose any more 'angle' to take photographs so figured a longer lens hood would alleviate some of the problems if no vignetting was caused.
 
The right reason so. Some people just like having a hood for the sake of it. Others think it helps protect the front element, they must walk into a lot of walls :D

You could always do a DIY jobby on a normal hood. Some black card wrapped around and taped on. You'll just have to use trial and error to see where vignetting creeps in.
