Lens showing ERR 99

Been looking for lens today and seen a lens I would be after but the owner says that the lens shows ERR 99 code on the camera.
The zoom works fine and the manual focus works finebut not the auto focus.

What could be wrong with this lens?? apart from just dirty contacts??

It is a 17-40 L lens

Could be dirty contacts on the lens or camera...try giving them a clean i suppose....

The lens is being sold by a shop with the code, so i guess its the lens not the camera.

Hi I had the same problem once, they change the chip that links the lens to the camera and they do not read each other.old lens new camera . if that helps.

Walk away, plenty more lenses to be had

IIRC ERR99 is "Unspecified Error" - in a lot of cases, it's dirty contacts, either on the lens or inside the mount of the camera. I had a old Sigma lens that used to fail with this error due to a bad implementation of the EF protocols, but in this case, as it's a proper canon Lens, and a L to boot, I think I'd walk away to be honest - there are plenty of 17-40L's around s/h.
