Lens warranty question

Not entirely sure this is the right place for this question...

If purchasing a second hand lens from a seller on ebay, in order to validate the warranty does the proof of purchase (receipt) need to show both...

Date of Purchase
AND
Serial Number

...or is the DoP sufficient on its own?

Most lenses don't have serial numbers, it's usually only the higher end ones that do.

Nikon, Zeiss and Sigma warranties are not transferable, not sure on Canon's position, but I expect they are the same.

Most lenses don't have serial numbers, it's usually only the higher end ones that do.

Every lens that I own now, and have owned has had a serial number.

I am sure every Nikon lens made will have a serial number

I've bought nearly 500 lenses in the last few years - Canon, Nikon, Sigma, Tamron and Tokina - and every single one of them has had a serial number.

But I don't think I can recall a single purchase receipt which contained the serial number.

Thanks guys - I know that all my lenses thus far have serial numbers, although I would not expect to see a serial number on a receipt.

Even though the official line is that lens warranties are non-transferable, I would expect that Canon are really interested the date of purchase (except for the odd jobsworth, of course )

Must put my brain into gear first. Of course the lenses have serial numbers, it was date codes I was thinking of. Doh.
