Lenses canon v sigma

I'm going to upgrade to a super telephoto lens and am undecided between the canon 100 - 400mm and the sigma 150 - 500mm each has pros and cons,I have a canon 500D but want to upgrade to a 7D,any advice would be helpful
 
Both are good lenses, used a Sigma 150-500 on my 7D for a couple of years, before upgrading to a Sigma 120-300 f2.8. This was shot with the 150-500 on my old 350D

The canon 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 IS is 12 years old now, the IS system is the 1st generation and the push pull system does take a bit of getting use to, but its one of canon's best selling lenses and if you get a good copy, its still a very good lens. It can be a bit soft 350-400mm wide open (just step it down), but most zooms suffer this.

The sigma 150-500mm f5-6.3 OS has the latest generation OS which seems (maybe) to give it the edge slightly as conditions drop off, but its still f6.3 at 500mm (well 450mm). It has similar issue to the canon, being soft at 500mm wide open depending on your copy.

In good light both lenses will perform well.

Other options are sigma 120-400mm f4-5.6 OS and 50-500mm f4.5-6.3 OS. The 50-500mm OS is slightly better than the 150-500mm, but you're paying the extra $$$ for it.

At the end of the day it depends on your budget and what you want to photograph
 
canon lens are pretty damn good as can be expected!!

ive got the 50-500os sigma which is a fantastic lens in my opinion- some people (myself inc) actually think that some of the sigma lens are better than their canon equivalents....

all zooms drop off at longer focals- suppose it really depends to what you want to use it for??
 
I had a Canon 100-400 and a Sigma 150-500 OS and after a lot of testing I decided to keep the Sigma. The IQ is very similar, both are very good, and the AF speed is also similar. I found the AF of the Sigma outlasted the Canon when the light was failing and the IS/OS system of the Sigma is miles better than the Canon. The 50-500 OS is supposed to be slightly sharper than the 150-500 OS but I've never used one so I can't say for definite.

This shot was taken on my 5D3 and 150-500, wide open at f6.3 and is the full photo taken SOOC with no PP.

And this is another shot, taken at the Waddington airshow, with the 5D3 and 150-500, wide open at 500mm and is SOOC with no other PP apart from a crop.

At well under £600 new from Panamoz you can't really go far wrong with it.
 
I haven't met anyone with a Canon 100-400mm wishing they had a Sigma xxx-500mm, I have the other way round though.

That's probably more to do with expectations than performance or actual experience (or results) of both lenses ;) I bet a fair few of these people with a 100-400 (whether you've met them or not) wish they had a (Canon) 300mm f2.8 and a better body.

ATM I have the 100-400mm and the 50-500mm OS (little better than the 150-500mm imo) on my 7D and have to say there is really nothing between them.

If I really had to choose just one (and I will have to soon) I will probably keep the Canon lens as it seems to lock focus just a little faster.
