I am a m/cycle racer and keen to do a bit more serious hobby photography not on action stuff on circuit but the paddock stuff as well, sadly i have over read on what the best lenses to buy and have opened a can of worms, so please guys can you help. Have just bought a Canon 7D (Body only), and after a decent tele/zoom lens and a decent lens for the paddock shots, money is not a major issue but want to be realistic as it will only be a hobby but want decent kit, please advise on any other kit i may need.

Money no object:

24-70L or 24-105L (both about £950)

and a 300mm F2.8 IS (about 3k)

Money being an object:

28-135 (about £380)

100-400L (about 1400)

Or

Sigma 120-300 F2.8 (about 1400)

You could go cheaper still, but having just spent £1400 on a body, it would be a waste imho

You also need a Flash, Maybe £300 for a decent one. £200 for an ok one.

Hope that helps. Sure others will disagree

Dont agree with your paddock lens suggestions - cant do better as im a Nikon shooter so dont know Canons lenses, but If your just buying the 1 lens get a zoom not a prime as that extra versatility will come in very useful. Also the primes suggested here are all way too long for paddock shots on a crop sensor camera apart from the 35mm which would be ok. I'd listen to duganick and look at the 24-70 or 28-135.

heres my options

paddock shots i would go for
24-70L or 24-105L or 17-55mm f2.8 with a niffty fifty for the badge shots. I use at the moment a kit 18-55 and the niffty fifty.

Track Shots
I use 70-200, 100-400 (dust pump) and for crap light days 120-300 f2.8. If I had the money I would go for primes.

i use Olympus so cant really comment on canon... ( i use 50-200f2.8 for pits and track and love it!)

just a thought, how about hiring some lenses and seeing what you like the best, OK a few quid but better than making a poor lens choice?

bob :)

With a 7D, EF-S 17-55 2.8 is perfect for paddock and walkabout. EF 70-300 IS is a very good longer lens for more reach and some track action. You can't go wrong with those two - quality gear, not too big/heavy, affordable. Both have IS, which is worth paying for.

You could go for one of the more expensive 70-200L zooms (there are four to choose from) if reach isn't that important, but they are a lot more money. Optically they are better than the 70-300, but not much, and have lower f/numbers if that's important. They are definitely a better pose though ;)

Maybe consider 100-400L for even more reach but it's a big b****r. Don't forget a flash, 430EXII will probably do nicely.
