I am looking for an effective dust cleaning solution. Some of the gunk I am getting is just a normal dust, but there might be oil stains from the mirror compartment too.

I have tried 'wet' solution and it gave me smearing.

Camera shop does it perfectly but it is rather expensive to use them every couple weeks.

So what are my options now? What experience do people have with either LensPen SensorKlear II or Arctic Butterfly? A comparison of the two would be handy.

1Ds II is really dirty now particularly bad in the corners, and 1DIII is slowly but certainly getting there.

Did a wet clean on a D200 a few years ago and managed to get greasy smears all over the low pass filter. A SensorKlear shifted the smears but I'm sure that it would have done the same as a wet clean had I used it on the raw oil globs! Pretty sure an Arctic Butterfly would have done the same and would have got itself clagged up with the gunk necessitating a clean of itself.

I find that the D700's self clean cycle does quite well with dust and what it can't shift (dustwise), a rocket blow does. Oil hasn't yet been a problem in the 700 but if/when it is, I'll do the wet clean followed by a sensorKlear.
 
I'd steer clear of the Arctic Butterfly - I had one and it dumped specks of what looked like the brush itself all over the sensor.
 
Hard to say if SensorKlear will do the whole job but it does have a good reputation.
 
You might get rid of some of it using a rocket blower - then use SensorKlear.
 
A drop of Eclipse fluid on a Pec Pad wrapped around a slice cut from an old credit card has always worked perfectly for me.

Procedure... view a test image, wrap Pec Pad around the credit card slice, tape in place, apply one drop of fluid, count to ten, wipe sensor... take and view test image.

I wish that was true in Canon land.

Anyway I have ordered Lenspen II from WEX. I will post an update when I get a chance to clean the 1Ds.

How were you using it?

Mine is absolutely spot on (off?) for removing dust (but not grease).
 
I recently got mine done at Jacobs. The guy there gave it a free blow clean and decided it needed a wet clean. They didn't have any kits in but ordered one for me. When they arrived I was straight back there and for the price of the kit £24 they cleaned it for me. It was more than just spots it turned out it was dirtier than first thought and got very smeary. Bad news all three swabs were used but every credit to the guy he persisted, with great care I must add, and the good news was he sorted it. Great service and a free demo of how to clean a sensor. Means I know what I'm doing next time round.
 
Mmm most odd as I've cleaned two 5d2's ,7d and a 40d with a rocket blower then sensor pen and resulted in very clean sensors in every case.
just my experience though.

Now I just swallow my pride, and get LCE to do once or twice a year. Then I use the clone tool to remove any dust bunnies, and take care when changing lenses to try to minimize the amount of dust getting in.

Although my last camera was a 5D, and that bloody thing seems to grow it's own dust!!
Now I have a 60D with built in sensor cleaning, won't need to worry about it anymore :nuts:
