Any critique on how to improve is welcome...especially on how upgrading to "proper kit" will improve my photos

i have a sony DSC-H2 and no PS

Its a nice shot, love the colours and the reflections. If I were to be hyper-critical I would suggest it needed a bit more room on the right (if poss) but otherwise its good.
As to upgrading, what a DSLR gives is, in most cases, better image quality and more options when conditions aren't perfect. It will also give you a hole in your bank account and a bad back from lugging all the kit about.
If you feel your current camera is holding you back then its probably time to make the move.

Been to the Orkneys a couple of times and Shetland is deinitely on the to do list.

You'd be very lucky to get a day like the one in the photo but worth a trip ....mind you its a treck from cheshire (my old stomping ground)
