Lightest & Smallest tripod to support 3KG of camera

That looks really heavy. 1.5kg doesn't exactly seem light for something that I guess most of us would be as a travel tripod. I was hoping for something simpler, maybe without extending legs and with a weight under 1kg.

I get what you mean but for me its small bulk is the thing. I'm not too bothered about weight.

Oh la la, the D300 landed? That's the way it is, once they get a hang of things, they'll take over all your stuff. And to think you have a whole family into Nikon ; that will not be good for your bank balance.

A couple of images of the Redsnapper 'squat tripod'
Sorry about the quality - someone had wondered off with my other camera and I had to use phone instead...... it probably should be used for what it was intended - making phone calls.

Tripod platform height with legs spread is just under 7"
1.5kg and 40cm when folded.
Extended it's 91cm
Max load 10kg

Looks a good bit of kit what sort of money does it run out at?

Redsnapper is an advertiser on here and they posted the price further up the thread, I think it was about £70 - 10%

I only ever spend overtime on camera equipment ! In August I had two weeks off and in the last 2 weeks worked 53 hours overtime !!! That was after 45 in July and before 25 in September !!!! Still the overtime will finish soon enough so I'm spending wisely.

Don't get me wrong, I don't question your wisdom on how you spend. I just didn't know that the D300 had arrived. I knew it was coming this month, but didn't know it get to Mrs. C yet.

I hope she's enjoying it. It is a very lovely camera. Feels almost just as sturdy as the D700.

I didn't think that you were Wail :)

I was just explaining that I don't normally have that much money to spend but due to a silly amount of overtime I have been able to do a little buying recently. I was leaving Helen to do a thread about her new camera but she has only had it a few days and not been out with it yet. She is loving it!

It looks great Joe. I am really tempted now (will have to wait a bit pending to get the funds). I have a few questions:

1) folded length is without a head isn't it?
2) extended length 91 cm - is it just with the legs fully extended or does it includes the column as well?
3) any chance of having 4 section (284) one done in the same way to make it even shorter when folded? (I know I'm probably asking too much ;))

If money is no object then you should take a look at the Gitzo GT1541T and Markins Q3T ball head.

The tripod is only 970g but it can handle 8kg and the ball head weights 385g and can handle 30kg!

This is an amazing combination which have been reviewed in another photography forum.

Folded length is without head.
Extended height includes short column up. (A long column can be provided if needed - I might include this as part of the 'kit')
The length of the main tube is the governing factor on the folded length, 4-sections would allow the the tripod to be higher.

I did.............£570 - Yikes!

I've just taken delivery of this combination and I'm very impressed. The ballhead 'friction limit' control is a revelation. Then again, it should be awesome for this price... :)

Well, this one is 1.5kg and 40cm when folded. Extended it's 91cm and rock solid.
The price is a little more than the standard Redsnappers but this is because it is built to order here at our workshop.
The price is £69.95 (-10% for TP members) + p&p
I will get some images here tomorrow.

Sounds very nice, although 1.5kg does seem a little on the heavy side for the size (Manfrotto 190x is 1.8kg and extends to much higher, although it doesn't hold as much or reduce down as much), however for that price I can forgive that.:)

I'll have to seriously look into that 'pod when I get a job...

Have any of you chaps tried an Ultrapod? They're very cheap and exceptionally light, wasn't sure if they were a complete waste of money or not:

They're clearly very plasticy, but does that matter if it does the job at hand?

It does to me at least. I am looking not for a decorative stand for a camera ;) but a small compact tripod which will go to reasonable height but yet will be portable. In other words exactly what Redsnapper and Giottos discussed here do. Tried gorillapod (SLR Zoom) and found it to be a bit of a rubbish (at least with Nikon D200+24-70 lens) so I'll probably will go for Redsnapper in the end

We can do shorter but there will be no foam leg covers.
The 284 will be more expensive by £5 because of the extra work making and assembling the 4th section. (£74.95)

So the squat version of 284 done in the same way as the 283 that you do now won't have the foam leg covers?

Sorry for so many questions, but I think I'll go for this (in the nearest future) so I'd like to get my choice right (since you saying that you can do it)?

Edit: Ok, I see it now having had a look at the 284 photos on your site. There is not much to cut away from 284 before the foam is reached. I wonder now if I should just buy a 284 and experiment with some aluminium cutting myself ;) (I would not do that to CF one that I have...)

Dunno for certain but if I were to hazard a guess it would be that the weight quoted refers to it fully extended. this is how I use mine below. Whatever - it's a great wee thing and handy as a handy thing.

Just received mine and wanted to thank Alan H for the heads up.
"Great wee thing it is."
