Hi everyone,

I could really use some help. I have Lightroom 2.6 but for the last couple of months I have been using Lightroom 3 beta to import my photos and make some edits, yesterday when I fired off Lightroom 3 beta it said the beta expired and it shut down, now my problem is that I have lots of photos that I edited in Lightroom 3 and the edit metadata is saved in Lightroom 3 Catalog.lrcat file and Lightroom 2 will not import it as it is created in a newer version.

Is there a workaround?

I thought the beta period was until June? It might be worth checking if there's a more recent version of the beta you can download. Then you can switch on the catalogue option to write edits to XMP files. I haven't tried it, but I'm guessing these will be readable by LR2.

LR3 beta catalogue is not readable by LR2 - and may not be readable by LR3 final release version either. There was a warning about this on the Adobe site where you downloaded from.

Try setting the time on your pc to an earlier date [in bios and/or Windows] and see if LR3 comes back to life. If not, uninstall it and try reinstalling it or a later version [if there is one]. You may have to trawl the registry to clear out any LR3 stuff. If you manage to revive it, convert all your edited photos to DNGs. You can create XMPs for each RAW, but it's a bit of messing about and the DNG route is easier and quicker.

I updated to Lightroom 3 beta 2 which is reading the catalog but will change to write the metadata to a xmp file from now.

Thanks for your help guys.

Apart from the catalogue problem - does LR3 look like it's going to be OK? An improvement?

Amongst other things LR3 will have

Improved demosaicing (in the Beta - Process - Version 2)
Improved Noise Reduction (in the Beta)
Improved Sharpening (in the Beta)
Lens Correction - As in Photoshop CS5, and should work with lens profiler.
Improved Import
Direct Tether
Improved Printing
Watermarking

There's likely to be a few additional features that appear in the final release that aren't in the public beta too, so will cerainly be a worthwhile upgrade.

Improved Import

I hope so, I generally keyword as I import so if, for instance, I have done a few different dogs I will mark their breed, owners etc in the keywords. In LR2 this is easy, in LR3 I find I have to disconnect the card reader between each import
