I have inherited an unopened copy of Lightroom (v1) from the shelves of a family member who passed away and it has been sitting on my shelf for a year or so. Now that I am taking a lot more shots I figure that maybe I should move from the cs2 bridge to lightroom to help me organise them (at the moment all shots are saved into folders just by date taken).

My question really is - what's the advantage over the bridge, and frankly should I bother?

Lightroom has built in editing, as well as the organisation stuff.

You can add a lot of stuff, keywords etc.

V2 also has the facility to do local adjustments, like cloning. It is a bit rudimentary and not as good as photoshop's cloning facility.

I'd say it has most (if not all) of the functionality of Bridge, with extra stuff on top.

Best thing to do, give it a try, you can always go back to bridge :)
 
If you have LR V1.0 then the first thing you should do is upgrade to the latest version of 1 which is 1.4.1

Lightroom works best with RAW files, but that doesn't mean you can't use it with jpegs ( or Tiff for that matter).

I think it's organisational tools are better than bridge. However you need to try it for yourself and decide.

I disliked a number of things about it when I first started using it. Among them the need to import photos, create libraries, and the general organisational features of handling photos (I use ACDSee for organising and managing - much easier). But over the following weeks I learned to live with it, having found the editing of Raw files to be relatively quick and easy. There are also some genuinely useful functions like hightlight recovery, and being able to clone out dust spots across a batch of pictures (containing the same spots that is - it's not a miracle worker). There are times when I wish that it had more of the elements of Photoshop, but so far it's keeping its head above water.
 
Thanks for all your comments. I've installed it now but no had a chance to play with it yet other than just importing my pics into it... hmm, I just thought: Does it copy and import or just link to originals, don't want to double my hard drive usage? I'll have to look that one up.
I'll check out some tutorials. If anyoe has any great tips let me know!
