little review on my sigma 30 mm 1.4 and sigma 50mm 1.4

purchased both these lenses recently for use on my crop cameras
Did plenty of research on the net reading many a review
The 50mm lives up to it's reviews of being fast focussing and delivering beautiful bokeh, but is a little to long for a crop camera
The 30 mm also lives up to is reviews being slow to focus noisy when focussing and often hunting, however it is better suited to a crop in focal length however once you so manage to get focus the bokeh is very good but fails in detail
conclusion sigma should have made the 30mm as good as the 50mm
I will just have to step back alot for my shots or get a 5dmk3 or buy the canon 35mm 1.4L

If you're all about bokeh you'd be better going to for a longer focal length ie 85mm 1.4 or 1.8, you'll get much better background separation.

I already have 1.8 covered with a 50mm
It was the sigma 50m f 1.4 that I was getting after my research, the 30mm sigma was secondary after a few members suggested the 50mm would be a little long
and despite the dodgy ebay seller the 30mm really was a cheap lens in the end
The 50mm ebay seller really did come up trumps even including 150 quids worth of free gifts

Of what? A longer focal range will always give more bokeh and it makes no difference if it's crop or FF.
 
It's quite a few years since I got my Sigma 30mm and did send the original back for a replacement but are there really still quality issues with Sigma lenses ?

not really sure with the 30mm 1.4 does seem that is how they are
the 50 on the other hand is in a different league

I don't really understand the "fails in detal" comment, it doesn't match up at all with my experiences. The 50mm is a later lens and the focus system seems better than the 30mm's but I actually found the 30mm sharper wide open. Maybe more use will create a little more love for this lens?

Personally I found the 30mm good on APS-C, the 50mm was a little long for me but goot for taking quite tight pictures of "things." I do have a Siggy 85mm f1.4 and it's a wonderful thing and very possibly better than the 50mm but better on FF for me. I really can't imaging using an 85mm on APS-C.

may be it's my copy maybe it's because the reviews I read are making me think the 50 mm is better
but the detail does look better on my 50mm pics than my 30 mm pics
It was you that made me get the 30 mm lol
I too am struggling to see why I would want an 85mm 1.4 on my crops may be we are missing something
I can however see the advantage of the 30mm length on my crops over the 50mm
price wise the 30mm and 50mm are similar new as greys, used the 50mm is higher and the 85 is rare and the dearest of the 3 new by a long way
so there would have to be a very good reason for me to need the 85 and I just can't think of one
happy with the 30mm over the moon with the 50 just a little long
 
Could the lack of detail with the 30mm be just the focal length of the 50mm giving greater magnification and therefore showing more / bigger detail? Or have you tried moving closer with the 30mm to give the same field of view / magnification?

Maybe 85mm on crop would be useful for some portrait shooters but personally I don't really like the oh so common these days tight head shot. I prefer a little context. Having said that, I currently have a 55mm on my MFT giving a FF equiv FoV of 110mm which I find useful for taking shots of "stuff" at a distance and flowers and detail at relatively close distance.

As I said, I hope that with a bit more use you feel a bit happier with the 30mm.
