Locust

Macro is something I do not spend much time on, but I think this is my best so far.

This is a locust which will be for my crested geckos dinner tonight.

This was shot handheld, I also now the focus is in the wrong place.

I know I still need to work at it more, but any advice/tips would be great.

It's nice, well lit, interesting subject. The main fault is the focal point as you've already pointed out, so the only advice I can give is to try again next dinner time. You might be able to get greater DoF with a higher aperture without too much loss of sharpness or, if it keeps still, it may be worth trying a focus stack. You have a nice clean background so it would look good if you can get the whole body in focus.
