Long term lens hire?

Yes
I've seen a few companies hiring lenses for up to a week, typically around £75 for a lens costing about £1000.

Does anybody know of any companies offering lens hire for longer periods, I'm thinking about 3 months while I go travelling and I'd be prepared to pay a few hundred quid? Or, do you think it would just be best to buy and sell when I get back?

As said for that period of time you'ld be better off buying it by the time you've rented and insured it!

Would definately insure it if travelling with a hired lens.

Depending on your destination, you could hire locally. I did this on my last trip to Canada.

What lens are you wanting?
Lenses For Hire do hire in 28 day periods. A 24-105L will cost you £149 for those 28 days. I'm sure if you gave them a call, Stewart will be happy to sort you something for 3 months. Though i'm not sure what you'd do with regards to insurance. I know hiring lenses to take abroad is something they've done there before.

Buy 2nd hand, then sell.....it'll probably work out free!!

This... :)

Anything over a couple of weeks and you may as well just buy used and resell it when you've finished. Unless it's a very popular lens and then you could probably buy it, use it for a week and then sell it within a day or so. Only cost would then be postage!

That's a potential idea. We're going to the USA so there's probably loads of hire companies there, as long as they hire to tourists without a fixed address.

I think you are probably right. That would allow me to take away a few really awesome lenses which I couldn't afford to keep afterwards, but they seem to keep their value very well so that wouldn't be a problem.
