I need a long ish lens for surf, bodyboard and jetski photography. Im doing alot of it at the moment with a 70-300 (non vr) on a tripod. I dont go out on the water so i need something thats ideally a zoom over a prime, as the focal lengths can change dramatically.

The 70-300 isnt very good over 100mm really, theres lots of distortion and ive even noticed some CA between surfboard and background! I dont have any shots, as i deleted them all.

I shoot with a D300s and a D70 though rarely use the latter anymore.

I was looking at the 120-300 sigma F2.8, though the lack of OS for off tripod shooting puts me off.

I also want to do alot of nurburgring photography when i go over there, another reason a big prime wont suit me - when i move around to cover different parts of the track, i might need a shorter focal length.

Any suggestions please ? Examples would be nice too :)

70-300VR?

I'll just drop in the comment that I'd disagree with the suggestion of the 200-400... and invite you to search my previous posts for further discussion of my opinion.

I would suggest the 70-300 VR as well. It takes the Kenko 1.4x tc as well although it does slow the AF down a little.

This was taken at Minsmere RSPB, 300mm with the 1.4 attached on a D300.

Hope this helps

Nikon 80-400mm VR?
Sigma 120-400mm OS

Although I would say that you probably want to keep your shutter speed up so VR is going to be less of an issue anyway - the 120-300mm is a fantastic lens if you get a good un.
