That's a lovely table, Robert, and the mechanism looks seriously clever. 
I've passed the link to Mr JG for him to drool over, too. He's into woodturning, after deciding furniture making involved too much kit and a long apprenticeship.
Interesting debate on the varnish/wax/oil options. A semi-gloss varnish sounds practical for a table, and it certainly looks good. And your next project???
