Thanks for your comments Christine. It was a overcast day and hence on the dark side. I felt that by lightning up the moody, overcast feel would be lost.

My take on this is that if the same shot was taken against a blue sky the detail of the gull would be the same but it would lack atmosphere and mood. Again I consider this is down to individual taste.
