Looking for a Canon zoom for.....

Something like motorsport (maybe bikes), and possibly aircraft.
Would a Canon 70-300mm L have enough length on a 40D (1.6X) , Or should I be looking for a 100-400 L.
Money is always an issue :( so I will be looking for secondhand. Just missed out on a 70-300 L for £500. :(
Maybe there are alternatives, but it's gotta be sharp! :)
 
Have you had a look at the Classifieds forum for secondhand Canon gear?

No problem. Select the "Forum" tab of those on the top left and then scroll down to the section headed "Classifieds" and within that you will see all manner of options including one headed "Canon". Worth a try there.

It won't let me in. I think I need to be a member for longer before I can view classifieds

A 70-300 will do you nicely but have a look at the 120-300 Sigma too (not the new one which is £££!). Great Motorsport lens and great reach on a crop body.

I will have a look at that one . Cheers. I think I would go for the 70-300 Canon, but it's a bit much for me at present. £800+ ??
 
If you are on a limited budget have a look at the Tamron 70-300. Inexpensive and probably offers the best bang for buck of any telephoto zoom lens. Try looking on Flickr for some examples of photos taken with this lens.

The 70-300L is a nice lens and certainly worth a look and if you can pick one up at a great price, well worth it.

The 100-400 has a new version out now, so the price of the original 100-400 has / is dropping in price. Certainly worth a look - if you like / don't mind the push - pull system...
 
Sigma 150-500 could also be an option, with the 150-600 out the 150-500 is dropping in price as well.
 
Thanks everyone for the suggestions and advice. Good idea @Grumps1974 about searching flickr. I am new to Flickr, so didn't realise you could do that.

That Tamron is 'very' impressive for the price !!! Very tempting.
The Canon looked best to me (70-300mm L), but it would, wouldn't it, at 3 times the price :jawdrop: :D
The thing is, with the L series, is that if you do need to do any sharpening, they sharpen smoothly if that makes sense :thinking:. Some sharpening looks horrible.
I will continue to scout about for secondhand, otherwise it looks like I will need to pay out a fair old whack :(
 
Well, I went ahead and purchased a Canon 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS L Series.
Tried it out today at the Sywell Classic Show. I was too far away from the action to get any quality images.
I did manage to capture this stray. What do you experts think of it?
It was my first attempt at aircraft photography, and I found it very tricky, especially with the prop aircraft (balancing prop movement with sharpness etc).

I should add......this was quite a way off distance wise, so I have cropped it pretty heavily during editing :(
1/400 sec , f5.6, ISO100, @300mm .....Canon 40D.
