As the title says, because my 18-200 is not compatible for my 1D MkIII, I need a lens to replace this

This lens was perfect on my 40D, it was light so it was ideal for me to take on holiday and gave me all the range I needed. Just with one lens :'(

So what replaces it?

Don't really understand why you'd want a do-it-all lens on a 1D tbh? They're almost incompatible ideas.

At any rate, there is a Tamron 28-300 VC lens under £500 which will be a similar sort of thing without the cost of Canon's 28-300L. Given the awkward 1.3x crop that comes out as a 36.4-390 equivalent rather than the 28.8-320 equivalent that your 18-200 gave.

Still, if you have enough room and weight in your kit bag to lug a 1D body around I'd imagine you have room to split it between two lenses. I guess I can understand not wanting to change the lens but tbh I just used a 50 1.4 on my 5D for the first few months of having it, and because of the DoF and low light ability I found it way more versatile than any superzoom would have been. Just my personal opinion but I prefer getting 20 wow shots from a holiday than 100 'oh look I was here' photos.

Purely because I don't want to have to take 2 or 3 lenses with me on holiday, especially not the ones that cost a lot and really don't want to take them abroad with me :)

Plus the airline likes to charge for each speck of dust so was trying to travel a bit lighter

But.....saying that

I have just got myself a 28-80 and might be looking at a 75-300 so this would be good enough I suppose?

Get a cheap second body and kit lens - like a 450D and 18-55 IS or something of that ilk - you can get a good one for under 300 notes - otherwise you'll just spen the whole trip worrying about your expensive camera

or get a micro 4/3 system like the panasonic G2 or GF3

or a good bridge camera

If I had 300 quid, I would

If you havent got 300 quid you are going to struggle to get a good replacement lens to go on the 1D anyway

if life is that tight maybe you should sell the 1D

;)

No chance of selling my 1d. And life isn't tight, just have other things to pay for

Plus the 18-55 doesn't really cover the range of the 18-200 and if I had bought a 450D then I might as well have just kept the 18-200

Some people are so picky  ( I meant to write "18-55 and 50-250 IS")

Picky moi?

:D

well I've just offered to buy a 75-300, that will be my holiday lens
