Im thinking of upgrade my 1000d

Want something with a bit more poke :)

Now i want to get a rough idea of what to go for i of course will be selling the 1000d ad adding more money in

Any idea's
 
What is it about your 1000d you dont like or feel is limiting you?

Also what lens' do you currently have?

The 1000D is a pretty decent camera with very good image quality for its entry level status.

Usually the problem is cheap and soft glass, so without knowing what you have we could only guess your needs. Of course, you may have problems with it being too small, in which case you would look at 40D, 5D, etc. etc...
 
Well to help slightly, when I had my 1000D and kit lens the pictures were acceptable.

Before I upgraded body I dumped good glass in front of it (Tamron 17-50mm and Canon 70-200mm f4) and what a difference it made. It bought me extra time with the baby Canon.
As others have said though, without knowledge of your limitations and lens line up we can't really help.
 
What do you mean something with "a bit more poke"? In what respect?

Better lenses are the items which provide the massive differences in image quality, but without more info with regards to your needs and means, and how the 1000d is limiting you we can't really offer any useful advice!

Owning the 550d and frequently borrowing a 1100d, I can say that the 550d seems to have better ISO performance, and a few more megapixels - but the MP has never been an issue for me.

If I were to upgrade, (having purchased decent glass), I think that the 40D/50D/60D with better AF and faster shutter speed offers something worth going to.

Otherwise, if you want video, the 550D might do.

Overall my opinion is that a 2nd hand 50D would be better than a 550D (If I could have my time again...)

This should clear a few things up

I currently have a 50mm 1.8 and the standard lens that came with it.

Budget - If i was to keep the camera -£250 - £300 if i was to sell it and start again - what ever the camera is worth plus £250-300

Types of photos - General Outdoor / Family

Would like - Better ISO levels ( Not many options on the 1000D)
Video ( Maybe depending on what it is actually like on a DSLR)
Faster Shutter speeds

If Glass does this the so be it and i have no idea what to go for. Im all ears
 
Given you won't get much from the sale of the 1000D and kit lens (I sold mine a while ago for £200) that plus your additional funds wont leave much to play with after a body upgrade.
I suggest you focus on new glass, maybe something like a Tamron 17-50 f2.8 which will give far more than the kit lens ever will.
The extra stops available would help offset a potential higher ISO.

As for shutter speeds, all xxxDs go to 1/4000th. If you want 1/8000th you would need to go to a xxD or xD.
Shutter speed should not be a deal breaker though in most situations.

Can't assist on the video front as that ain't my forte.

Richard - from your photo locations it looks like you live very close to me. If you want to have a play with an L lens on your 1000D and see the difference it makes (plus have a go with my 7D if you want, even tho it's well beyond your budget) then drop me a PM and we can meet up somewhere. Stanwick Lakes is only a few minutes drive from me.

Hi Richard

If you want Video function, then I think you're looking at a 550D, which you should be able to pick up new in your budget (selling your current body), obviously more of a saving if you go for 2nd hand.

When you say a faster shutter speed - do you mean Frames Per Second - if you are afer a higher FPS, then you're looking at the xxD range -> 40D, 50D etc.

The 60D gives you both options - video and a faster FPS, as well as a new tilt rear screen, but I think it's going to stretch your budget even if you can find one 2nd hand...

What about size of body - do you want something bigger than yours or are you happy with the size ?


Is your budget a final budget or do you have some for uprading you lenses, as others have said buying better quality lenses can make a big difference, but obviously doesn't overcome the issues with your current body - FPS etc.

A good friend of mine upgraded his 450D to a 60D and loves it, but the only reason he swapped to a 60D was he wanted a higher FPS, he had already bought himself some good lenses and noticed the difference in his photos these made.
