I paid about a fiver for one of the ebays Mennon ones, after reading reviews that they were very nearly as accurate as the Expo-Disc.
 
I don't see why they shouldn't be exactly as accurate as an Expodisc - just needs to be perfectly neutral (and I'm pretty sure they are). Same as doing a custom white balance off a sheet of plain white paper, or just hold it over the lens and point at the light. Coffee filters are supposed to be good too.

Providing the colour is pretty close, consistency is more important that absolute accuracy, which is both subjective and a bit of a moveable feast at the best of times.

Sorry if I was a bit blunt, but that ExposDisc is the most over priced accessory ever! I made one once with the lid from a pack of Pringles. Lined with three sheets of Tesco Value printer paper I also got it to deliver 18% transmission for incident light reading ;)
