how can you tell? i know it is a stupid question but a picture i took in Rome i want to print, but the on line sites i have looked at say no good too low res.

For Prints you normally aim for 300 DPI, which at the full D90 resolution is approximately a 15"x10" print.

If you start cropping you lose resolution, and if you want to print larger than 15x10 the DPI will be less than 300.

Generally though, the bigger you print stuff, the further away you will be looking at it from, so you consider a larger print at a lower DPI to be OK. It just takes a bit of experience printing stuff out, and will vary with the quality of the image.

A side issue, if the image is 1,000,000DPI but is very soft, the image printing site will say the resolution/dpi is OK, but the print will still turn out soft.

thank you for taking your time to reply. i think i will have to go to a shop. the DPI is showing as 300 but can't get a print as small as 6x4..

What's the resolution of the image you want to print? What size do you want to print it at?

just want a bit bigger than A4 say vertical and horizontal dpi both 300 resolution unit 2. sorry to sound so thick..

By Resolution I mean the number of pixels you have in the image. DPI is a printing thing. However assuming you have a full resolution D90 image file with no cropping, you have plenty of pixels to produce the image size you want at around 300dpi

In other words its about 11mp. You can print to probably 24x16 and still have a great looking print. 15x10 would look amazing.
