feels a bit odd slung round to remove the camera

Where do you put the water bottle though? never happy with bags that don't supply a drinks bottle mesh or ones with the general compartment above the camera gear in case of leaks

Staying hydrated is extremely important, one answer is the Lowepro sliplock bottle holder, unfortunately its rarer than the proverbial rocking horse ****
 
I will employ key survival techniques by licking the moisture off rocks and sucking the moisture out of vegetation
I do have to agree with you I was disappointed that it had no bottle holder
I'm sure there will be something appropriate at out door centres
