Last week I decided to clean up my desktop, so I grabbed everything together, made a folder and then put it on the dock. I then moved the orginal file (that was on the desktop) into the trash, so the desktop was clean. Then yesterday I...emptied the trash and now all the documents etc have gone! I didn't think this would happen, fortunately I have the original files at TM is used every sunday, but I will have to spend a few hours updating the files. Does anyone know of a way to kind of undo the delete trash?

Many Thanks

No. that's the whole point of having the trash can then doing an empty trash. It means you don't want the files any more as it is a 2 stage process to delete them! If you want to tidy your desktop then make one folder in the documents folder for example and put everything in that. Then your desktop is clear and no risk of deletion. Folders and items on the dock point to where the originals are. They're not the files themselves so if the original is deleted then keeping them on the dock doesn't make them exist still. It works like a windoze short cut basically.

There might be a norton or similar for macs.

ah I see. Thanks for that, I've just downloaded stellerphoenix to try and recover them. I'll do that from now on, didn't realise they were just shortcuts.

If you are running time machine, restore the files from there

I already have done, but I only have it backing up every sunday, and I perfermed a lot of edits on the wed/Thurs :bonk:
