Macro Beginner.

so i have bought a new camera, my Nikon D5000. Being 17 im only just starting my photography portfolio but aim to get a few lenses in the January sales. Here is one of my around the house pictures. please criticize. (yes its not the prettiest of roses.)

It seems to be a bit soft focus and certainly the light is very flat, try with a three quarter light on it and a reflector from the other side close down the aperture 1.5 stops ok, this will bring the background more into focus but the flower will benifit.

We all have to start somewhere and so welcome to the forum Greg. The shot is a little soft and you banged it in dead centre too, have a google at "rule of thirds" to help with composition to give your shots a more artistic feel. Looking forward to seeing how you progress.
