hi,after looking at the price of a dedicated macro lens for my d90 approx 230, against the price of extension tubes aqpprox 60 for the kodak,i was just wondering what the pros and cons were cheers guys

i've got some extension tubes, they are really hard to use. never used macro lenses, but i'd imagine it's more point-and-shoot than the extension tubes.

auto focus range becomes tiny, so you really have to use the zoom dial as manual focus. then there's the problem of trying to find that insect with a completely blurry view finder.

if you've got the money, go for the lens, it is usually a brilliant all round lens.

ive already got a nikon 18-55,nikon 70-300 and a sigma 150-500 so what would anyone recommend and what is ai on a nikon lens and how do i know it will fit my d90 seems to be a lot of different abreviations around thanks

Personally I have used the Canon 100mm macro lens (No IS) but would definitely recommend extension tubes since they can be used with any lens that fits your camera and give very good results.

You really need the Auto focus tubes since they retain all the electrical controls to your lens.

Amazon have a set for the Nikon here:

But macro photography does involve a very steep learning curve whether you go with tubes or a dedicated macro lens or even a cheap set of close up filters:

I have used these lenses with a fair degree of success but they work much better with lenses which require smaller filters.

.

I would be another that would recommend auto tubes they are worth the exrta money. I used tubes with a zoom lens using the zoom to manualy focus.

Also think about what you aim to take macro of and the distance you need to be to achieve macro results. If you are after insects in the wild you need a bit more distance.

I am still new to macro so am still learning but find it makes me go out and look for things I would of walked by before.
