Hi there. I'm just looking for a bit of info from anyone who has experience with macro flashes. I currently shoot with a sigma 105mm macro and was looking at a few budget rings or macro flashes. I May invest in a raynox 250dcr too. Any info to help me make a decision would be greatly appreciated.

Save money... buy something like a Godox TT350 add a diffuser (you can make one from a plastic milk bottle) you will be able to hold this fairly close or invest in a bracket. You will, with practice get better results.

Personally for macro photography I swear by a set of Auto Extension rings - the ones which automatically couple to your camera's exposure and aperture.

With them you can use a variety of different lenses.

Many of these photos were taken with the Kenko DG auto rings and various lenses including the Canon 100mm F2.8 macro:

Good luck whatever you decide.

Thanks, I already have a speedlight, just wondered if I'd get better results with a dedicated flash.

Here are a few of my macro shots. I am pleased with the results I get, however, I mainly have to rely on full sunlight. I would like to try to get even closer with a raynox250, however, I would need enough light to be able to use smaller apertures. Though I suppose the problem with flashes is that they don't recharge fast enough.

For some ideas about Macro photography and flashes try looking at this thread.

I believe the ring flashes give a very even light across the object but if you have a light source to one side you get shadows and the photo often is more interesting.

Just had a read, interesting, some really good ideas!
