Macro lens for 1000d

I`m hoping to get myself a macro lens for my 1000d, but i`m wondering do i really need a canon version? Are there any other makes that do just a good a job without the price tag? Or is it better to save the extra? and reasons why! I think i`d like a 100mm macro lens you thoughts would be greatly appreciated, Harvey

Sigma 105mm macro is highly rated. Usually £250-£300 second hand. About £400 new I think. Used one for years. Also makes a nice portrait lens. I have no idea how it compares to the canon 100mm though.

The raynox macro adapters are also highly rated and are a cheap and cheerful way of getting into macro too.
