Macro lens for 450D

Hi all
Browsing the local camera shop today I noticed the 2nd hand shelf had 2 Macro lenses on it. :love: One was the Canon EF-S 60mm f/2.8 and one was the Sigma 105mm f/2.8 EX DG Macro.
(In last months Photo Plus Macro lens supertest the 60mm canon came out as best value buy and got 90%, the 105mm got 83% and marked down for fiddly switching from manual to autofocus and back)

The 60mm is £299 S/H boxed and the 105mm I think was £329.

I think im gonna go back with my camera tomorrow and try them both.

Wondered what people thought of the prices secondhand? To my mind the canon is a bit high? Its £354 brand new on amazon, the Siggy is £399 new so i think s/h prices are a bit high for both?:thinking:

I would like to use the lens for insect/butterfly close ups and flowers perhaps.

What do people think would be the best choice? I may be able to haggle the price down a bit on either of them perhaps if they are a bit high. I am drawn toward the canon at the moment but wonder if butterflies may fly off before I get close enough with that focal length.

the 105mm might give you that extra reach, which could be useful for the 'bugs'. I've been looking at the 100m Canon infact.

As for price - less than £30 cheaper than brand spanking new, I reckon thats worth a haggle. If not, why not get new then your covered with a warranty (assuming you wont get one with the 2nd hand).
 
Those prices don't look to great to me, MPB generally tend to have the 60mm and 100mm macro in stock for £250 and £330 respectively, some of them with lens hoods included.

If its purely for Macro work I'd get the 100mm Canon for better working distance and internal focusing but the 60mm does make for a decent portait lens if you want one.
 
Thanks for the replies guys. It seems the Sigma may be about the right price then but the 60mm canon is maybe £50 over. I imagine there will be a 3 month warranty or something on those lines.

Im tempted to carry on saving until I can afford the canon EF 100mm 2.8 USM
