Opportunity has come up to do some detail shots of stationery (custom business cards, compliment slips, custom cello tape ) on a regular basis and I was looking for some advice RE what lens to get for this..

I am planning to do the shots in a lightbox that I've created. I was thinking either a Nikon 60mm f2.8 Micro or a Sigma 50m f2.8 EX Macro - any suggestions?

( I have a d700, d90, 85f1.8, 501.4 AIS, 19-35f3.3 cosina, sigma 70/200 f2.8, 35-70 f3.3-4.5 -- so a 50/60mm prime would fit nicely.)

Try the 85/50 mm with some kenko tubes - a dedicated macro is overkill as you wont want 1:1 magnification

Here's an idea for you.

Get a set of extension tubes and put one of the short ones on your 85mm.

Superb for close ups and you'll save a bunch of money.
I use it a lot for close ups of leaves, buds and that sort of thing when I'm out and about.

This one is just me playing about, the model bike is about 3 inches long.

Haha - Paul beat me to it.

Great minds.... and all that.

ahh, no need for metering and autofocus when I'm using them in my house to knock out shot after shot of the same thing under the same condition, can just tripod and MF..

do Kenko do MF ones? those are the only available on WE.

You need to retain aperture control from the body or you will get a very dark image in the viewfinder or minimal DOF

ahhhhh ok, was assuming the aperture ring on the lens would let me change the aperture...

will probe just bite the bullet and get the kenko ones, to ensure i retain IQ.

Thanks for the help guys!
