Macro lighting

Hi all,

I've quite into macro, and I seem to have got my head round the basics. So i've just upgraded from my Raynox to a Sigma 105mm. Got an O bracket on the way to try out to mount my flashes around my lens, as a twin flash is way out of my budget.

The thing is, when i'm closing my aperture to widen my DOF, i'm obviously losing my ambient light, and losing the background, but in some shots it would be nice to keep the light of the background but keep a good DOF. Is there an easy way round keeping the background light with keeping my flashes on my bracket? What equipment would I use and how would I go about doing so? And what knowledge may I be missing?

Try reducing your shutter speed to retain more ambient light. If your flash is syncing at, say, 1/200th second, and your background could do with an extra stop or so of light, try dropping your shutter to ~1/125th or even ~1/60th.

Motion could potentially become an issue at lower speeds, but that's why god invented tripods
