Are reversing rings worth the £2.50?

I would be using it with either the Nikon 18-55 or tamron 55-200, neither of which have aperture rings. Would this a: work and b: get results that aren't a disaster? I am aware the of lack of metering, AF and likely very short working distances.

Basically would I be better off buying a pint?

Thanks

As a cheap way of doing Macro certainly worth £2.50. Though you have the aperture limitations as focusing when stopped down is tricky.

Just remembered that I also have an old Vivitar PK lens which does have a aperture ring. Handily this is also 52mm. Probably should get a body cap for the SLR though in that case.

Get the rings but use them with an old lens make is irrelevant as you are ataching via filter thread

I use my reversing ring with a Yashica 50mm ML and the results can be stunning, but tricky with the manual focus and very shallow DOF the lighting needs to be spot on, I often use my ring flash and the results improve. A good and cheap way to get good macro results.

The ring arrived today along with some caps for the pentax so the mirror doesn't get damaged with the lens off.

Initial experiments have just confirmed what I have read:
1: Light will be an issue (have made a diffuser for my YN-467 flash)
2: DOF is pretty shallow even if I stop down to about f11 (compounding light isuue)
3: With the lens stopped down I can see b****r all through the view finder with out a torch for additional light (sat indoors in a dim room which won't have helped)

Min focus distance gives about 11mm so that comes to about 2.1x mag if my maths is right.

Results seem reasonable so far. Focusing wasn't as bad as I expected so long as I can brace against something but plenty room for improvement yet. Probably be easier in better light so I can use 2 hands.

Samples, both at f11 I think.

Missed focus here a bit, was aiming for the nose but as soon as the torch moved out the way so did I!
