Magnifying eyepiece

I'm thinking of getting a magnifying eyepiece for my D700 because I feel that having a larger viewfinder might help my composition when I have the camera to my eye. It looks like they are relatively cheap so maybe it would be worth a try.

Does anyone have any experience with using one?

i use one on mine as you say not expensive
also set your diopter

Use one all the time, when not using the DR-5.

Something to be aware of apparently is that the image might be magnified, but you now may not be able to see all of the image... i.e. you have to shift your eye physically to see every corner...I know this was why I didn't want to get one for my D300.

This was one of the things I was wary of actually... have you noticed this on your camera Wail?

Same here, it's in the bottom drawer now.

Yes, found it a big improvement in helping read viewfinder info. Add a rubber eyecup to keep out extraneous light.
Be sure to close the eypiece shutter before attemping to take the original eyepiece off because they are interlocked.

Yes, it's an issue to live with; but if you don't like it then pass on this. For me, I'm always using the DR-5 so squinting and moving my eye around isn't much of a bother really.

Another issue, if you're using this on a D700, is the fact that the viewfinder is only 95% of the picture frame. Now, this has nothing to do with the eyepiece; however, it has a lot to do with composing your picture.

Because of the viewfinder limitation, I find that I need to guess an adjustment to the field of view; I have to make sure that I don't get any unwanted artefacts in the picture. Because of the eyepiece magnification, I have to keep moving my head / eye all the time to get the readings I want. Could the two together, and this can slow-down your shooting! At least, it does for me.

But, as a landscape, nature photographer, this isn't much of an issue. Mountains, sand dunes, and woodlands aren't going to be moving much while I keep composing :p

neve been a problem for me,then again i crop a lot as neccesary
