Ok, I'll be honest I'm after your tips and tricks. :D

I'm photographing the works xmas party tomorrow night and just curious of what you say to get people to show national smiles? Saying cheese, is well, a little cheesy these days.

Rather than getting them to pose and put on forced smiles why don't you concentrate on taking candid shots showing your colleagues enjoying themselves and laughing naturally.

Oh, and don't forget to check the empty offices from time to time....:)

Hi Colin, I'll be taking candid's as the night ware's on but I've got to photograph them as they walk through the door. So no getting around the posing bit.

It's in a local hotel, so checking the bedrooms could be interesting

ask them to whistle the national anthem

Since you'll know most of them keep the chat going and try a slightly/gently risky joke just before taking the shot, something about management for example.

Hi Steep, I found this method to work very well. I was starting to loose my voice by 9pm. lol. Its suprising what yopu could learn about people by pointing a camera at them.

At a Kindergarten shoot the other day, one of my sitters, when I asked her to say 'Cheese' said "No, but I can say Ameisen-Scheisse (ant-s***) instead..."

Kids...gotta love 'em...

This one was taken at a WW2 weekend at Crich Tramway Museum. The couple were pushing this pram from the period, with a doll as a baby. The two of them looked really solemn, so I just said to them "can you get the baby to smile". As you can see it did the trick. I think the answer to the ops question is that there is no one way to get your subject to smile in a natural manner, you just need to tailor some little quip to suit the occasion.
