I think it's the back grounds, the leafs and branches behind the female make her more difficult to make out, which is the reason she is the colour she as to help camoflage when she's nest sitting. The male shot tho has nothing distracting behind him and with his bright colouring he jumps out at you.

Both are great shots.
 
A lovely pair David, not sure if they are local to you but have you noted many with the scaly leg or bumblefoot disease? I have a Male around here who has had it bad for over a year, but he is still soldiering on :D
