Manfrotto Tripod - not a tripod question

Ok this isn't a tripod question as I have just purchased a 190xdb with 391rc2 head from Currys for £50!!!!!!!!! Not sure what happened but when they told me I couldn't resist. it's new, boxed yada yada. Not what I wanted, 055, but for the price I'm over the moon.

The question I have is a recommendation for a ball head. Any advice will be very appreciated.

Manfrotto make various ball heads, and much will depend on how much weight you're going to be putting onto it. I have the 498 RC2 ball head on one of my tripods - this will hold up to 8 kgs and has a quick-release plate. It's nice and smooth, but there are others which will hold less weight and as a result won't be quite as expensive.

Thanks for that. I am new to all of this. I have an eos400d with a sigma 70-300 lens.
I have been looking at the head you mention and because I saved more than expected on the tripod I have more to spend on an extra head, and possibly sell current head in the future.
Even thought about finding a geared head on eBay.
My photographic subject is to be decided. I am currently practising with various things, landscapes, wildlife, star trails, light trails, water and waterfalls and Motorsport. I decided this was the year I got off the auto setting and start using the camera.

Personally I shoot landscapes and architecture most of the time and have one of the tripods permanently in the boot of my car. The other head I have is a three way version which I find useful as well as the ball head.

You've certainly made a good purchase with the Manfrotto as they are very well built tripods. Good to hear you've taken the camera off auto - nothing like a bit of manual creativity.
