Manual File Number Reset

So I did a stupid thing and grabbed a half full memory card and used it in a new camera. Now the file numbering is all screwed up.

I know what the the real count should be, but I can't figure out how to get the correct number back on to the camera. Does anyone have any suggestions?
On a 1D mkIII if that's any help.

'S alright I figured it out by formatting cards, manually resetting the count to zero, renaming a file on the computer to the right number, copying it to the card and then putting it back in the camera.

Easy!

Now, is there an easy way to confirm the mechanical actuation count? The EXIF readers seem to pick up the file number and not the physical count.

I had a look at an old FredMiranda thread but gave directions on which Unknown variable contained the number but it was from a few years ago and didn't make sense with the file I was using.

Any suggestions?

Making a dummy file with the number you want to start from is what I'd do too.

As far as I know you cannot get the shutter count from the 20D level (and later) cameras.
