Hi,
I'm off to Marrakech on holiday next week and was wondering if anyone had been before and had any tips for cool stuff to go and see and take pics of?
Really looking forward to seeing Jemaa el Fna (by day and night), having a wander around the Souks, seeing the Majorelle Gardens and we're hoping to get a trip up to the Atlas Mountains.
Are there any other hidden jems out there waiting to be discovered? Any suggestions would be much appreciated :D

Cheers, Jim.

I went before I had my camera, but we got massively hassled in the Souks area - you have to be firm to avoid getting caught up in some sort of sale or scam. And under no circumstances slow down anywhere near Henna Tattoo women! So my advice would be to keep your witts about you. But you'll get some awesome shots :) We also went to the little seaside village of Essaouira, which was brilliant and really chilled out.

If you want to eat some awesome food, and watch some belly dancing at the same time, go to Jad Mahal - totally ace!

Go to

Town square of Marrakech, Jemaa l-Fna indaylight and a must at night.

from there it is a short walk into the souks which i feel are a must but unless you have a brilliant sense of direction go in a tour or with a guide. It is immense.

also Koutoubia Mosque You can see the tower from the square.

Menara gardens lovely.

Majorelle Garden and Museum of Islamic Art in Marrakesh latterly looked after by Yves St. Laurent

just a few ideas.

I was there last week with camera in hand. It is a stunning place for taking photos, but you do get a lot of different responses. In a week I had at least 20 people stop me from taking photos, including police officers. I hired a bicycle (I recommend it but you need your wits about you) and saw most of the Medina. Happy to share some info with you if email/pm me.

Cheers guys, there's some food for thought there...

I understand that as a non-Muslim I can't go in the Koutoubia Mosque itself, but the gardens are open to everyone?

Jad Mahal - Thanks for the tip, that looks great

justin72 - Thanks, will drop you a PM later.

Do the locals speak good English, or is it worth trying to learn a little Arabic before going?

last time i was in north africa all the locals in the markets kept saying "better prices than asda" all the time, very amusing!

and you will get hassled in the markets, but dont worry they do it to everyone!

It's a great place, some great architecture - just beware if you try to photograph the locals, they don't always like it, so best to ask and don't be offended if they say no. I went on a cycling holiday and that was the same all over Morocco.

try and get a minibus hire to take you to the seven waterfalls...quite a climb
