Hello,

I need to submit some photos to DSCL later today for printing for a photo exhibition. Clearly, the quality needs to be top notch.

I've printed with them before so I know what I'm doing but I just wanted to run it by, incase I'm doing something wrong.

I've got standard SGRB files in JPEG format atm. As they request on their website, I'm converting it to their Fuji printer paper profiles in photoshop. I've noticed that the colours on the screen change when you convert profiles or even soft proof for that matter.

Why do the colours change?
1 - I thought its because photoshop is trying to simulate how the print would look on paper (very dull)
2 - Its adjusting the colours so that when printed, it would come out looking as originally planned in the SRGB profile.

I thought 1. was right as paper usually has a smaller gamut compared to RGB spaces yer? So I edited the photo a bit in the converted profile to make the colours look same as the sRGB space. The results were very much better than not embedding any paper profile at all.

Is editing the photo after converting a bad idea because there is some clipping in the shadow and highlight detail.

Also DSCL want their photos in the correct size for printing, ATM, I'm going to photoshop > image size > and changing dpi there to 300 and adjusting the size for the correct print. Does that actually resize image or just what is displayed on screen?

Regards,
Sid

When soft proofing, my thought was that Ps is gving a representative look at what the page will look like when printed on the printer with that specific paper (i.e. the profile you use).

A very important thing though is that your monitor will need to be calibrated or what you see on your monitor may not be correct.

I was wondering if there is any way to improve that though but the guy on the phone said not to change anything after converting the profile.

I'm hoping for the best here. The prints need to deliver as they are for an exhibition.

I had a chat to one of the guys in Park Cameras yesterday about something similar to this - they use Fuji printing and he was able to give me some tips on how best to process my images to make sure they print as I want them to.
The main one was that I should adjust my WB to make it cooler since the auto-processing on the Fuji printers makes it warmer. He also said that the printer will increase the contrast so I shouldn't go crazy with that either.

I'm going to make some experiments and save the actions to match up to some text prints I'll get made.
