memory cards (SDHC) abroad - ports (cruise)

Am off on a 2 week western med cruise in a few weeks time with a Nikon D90 (SDHC).

So far I have 3*8Gb cards (2 class 4/6 + a uber 30Mbps sandisk extreme III) which gives me ~1500 raw. Those cheaper cards (lexar, transcend) are only 12-15 from 7dayshop etc

I'm an SLR newbie. As a baseline on my last cruise I took approx 800 shots on a compact 5MP.

Can anyone comment on the typical retail prices of cards around the major ports (or on board .. am going with ocean village).

Just wondering if it's worth getting even more -- I guess I could always sell 2nd hand on return if unused!

Id always recommend going with the better brands, for example my sandisk extreme 3 1gb (cf) gives me 60 raw shots, however a cheaper old fujifilm 1gb only gives me 52.

7day shop are pretty cheap for the 4gb extreme 3 SDHC cards, grab a few of those? if your really struggling for space further on in the trip you might want to swap to JPEG just for pure space saving

Will you have access to a computer while on board? If so, consider taking some trusted blank DVDs and transfering images to them when your cards are nearly full. Given the relatively low cost of SDHC cards these days, taking a few more shouldn't break the bank.

At a guess, places in and around the major ports will be charging tourist prices for memory cards, so stock up from 7 day (or similar) before you go - you may even be able to sell some memory to other cruisers on board if they haven't taken enough.

I wouldnt worry about taking too many cards, there should be a ships photographer onboard with a processing lab and will also sell cards. not 100% on this but when i worked on the Artemis they had one.

The price of a few *spare* cards is nothing compared to the cost of the cruise, I'd rather come back with 5 unused cards than be wishing I'd had room for *that* shot :D

Been on 2 cruises already and took around 3000 pictures each cruise. Was carrying eight 2 GB CF cards, one for each port. Just makes life simple to post process those many pictures after the cruise.

Take them from here as they may be *very* dear outside UK.
