as above, looking for something up to the 200mm (ish) mark, fast, etc. Giving serious thought to the 80-200mm but what other options are there? 70-200 is just too expensive! personal experience and example pics would be useful ;)

To be used with a D300 and D40x as a backup.

you'd be better off with the Nikkor 80-200 or saving for a Nikkor 70-200 even. I think you'd be disappointed by the Sigma. Bear in mind the 80-200 won't auto focus on your D40x (unless you can find the AF-S version) only the d300

80-200 seems to be the best option... most things dont focus on the D40x :D, accepted that a LONG time ago :D :D :D

thanks for the sigma info, have you had/used/seen results of one?
 
I tried it when I ended up buying the Nikkor 70-200 instead. They are worlds apart.
