Might have destroyed a lens - repairs possible?

Just had a disaster where my camera with the EF-S 10-22mm lens attached fell out of a hole in a bag onto a tiled floor about 50cm below.

The lens just fell to pieces - the glass elements appear fine but the back end has come apart near where the focus ring is exposing electronics (and i cant get it back together).

Is it possible that this lens can be repaired or is it trashed completely? No obvious smashed bits but a ribbon cable seems to have detached and i cant see how to put it back together.

Do canon or 3rd parties do repairs?

Its my work lens (used 100% of the time underwater) so absolutely essential too so if it cant be repaired i need another asap.

Canon's service centre at Elstree does repairs. We send stuff there all the time. I don't think I've ever experienced a lens broken quite as severely as your sounds to have been, but I've had some fairly serious ones that have been fixed.

There are a handful of other places in the UK who are authorised to repair Canon equipment. You can get their details from the Canon web site. But for a really big job I think it would be best to go to Canon directly.

However ... it's quite possible that the cost of rebuilding it would be more than the cost of a new lens.

If I were you I'd take a few photos of the wreckage and send them to the repair centre, and ask them for an opinion as to whether it could be repaired economically.
 
I did the exact same thing to a Nikon 24-70. Nikon told me that would repair it (under my pro photography insurance) but when it came back the lens had a new serial number. So I think at the very least I had a new lens barrel. Wether they salvaged all the glass from the original i'll never know.

I suspect the repair will be very costly...
 
As it looks like you are in Dahab (Gold for those who don't speak Arabic) then you might have a harder time. When I lived there there was only Canon in Cairo who even had a chance of helping when my 24-105 had an error. As I was getting close to returning home I had another spare sent out so that I could keep shooting and still had a backup in case of any other problems, fortunately nothing else went wrong while I was away from Canon UK's great service.

heartbreaking for you though, that sound when it hits the floor must have been painful, hope you manage to get it repaired!!! :thumbs:

Im actually back in the UK tomorrow so it'll be Canon UK (ive given up getting anything done in Egypt - everything needs to come from abroad!).

Its even more frustrating given ive finished work and using it ready to pack to bring home when it fell!
 
Umm, you have looked at your travel insurance policy I take it... and if this is essential for work, will your employers replace it (if you have any, of course)?

I guess that's good news, and I know what you mean about getting stuff out there. I do fear that it will be cheaper to replace but hope you get some good news when Canon replies.
 
Not convinced its cheaper to replace given the RRP seems to be around £600 and 2nd hand not under £500.
Im hoping not anyway. All that seems broken to me is a small plastic clip holding the casing together around the circuit board area. Nothing else loose or rattling but we'll see.

Id rather it landed on the body - the body costs a lot less to replace plus i wanted to upgrade anyway!

Probably a good idea not to carry a camera in a bag with holes in it? :shrug:
