A quick question for any Sony folk around......

A friend has a Minolta 505 SI super film body with a Tamron AF Aspherical LD ( IF ) 28-300mm macro, 1 : 3.5-6.3 lens.....is this lens compatible with Sony's current DSLR range and, if so, is it worth enough/good enough to choose Sony when going digital?

Thanks in anticipation....

Not a Sony user, but I would say that any KM-fit AF lens of that range must be recent enough to be compatible, if folks still seek the beercan.

The range, though, despite shake reduction, is an obvious compromise. I got the Sigma alternative when I had to, but the old Tamron Adaptall-2 60-300mm is far better and I wouldn't accept the new Tamron 28-300mm with vibration control when it was sent in error.

Thanks for the advice so far folks....

The link shows that the "score" is only based on one review which I'm loathed to accept as representative as every lens has its fans given that budgets and experience cover such a wide base in this hobby....thanks all the same Leaky.

Yep the lens will fit, all AF Minolta fit lenses fit on the Alphas and I've never heard of any not being compatible!

The older Tamron zooms aren't great with low light, AF is pretty slow, and sharpness is poor, however colours are very good and they also have great build quality.
